Emergency security talks held in Nigeria
Nigerian president calls for emergency talks on security after Christmas terrorism but officials find difficulty in tackling this new phenomenon.
Following bombs set off on churches and other targets on Christmas Day, Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan called an emergency meeting with his security chiefs yesterday.
The meeting was held to discuss a growing Islamist militant threat involving attacks which have raised fears that militants are attempting to set off sectarian conflict.
One of the most deadliest attacks resulted in the deaths of 27 people following a bomb set off in a church outside the Nigerian capital.
Officials involved in the emergency meeting said that terrorism was a new phenomenon and they were struggling to find a solution.
Boko Haram, a violent Islamist sect, was blamed for several shootings and bombings in north Nigeria and Abuja but Jonathan’s administration was criticised for being unable to tackle the problem.
Nigeria is now a fractured society according to Opposition leader Muhammadu Buhari who added that there was violence everywhere as security crackdowns failed to resolve the situation.
