Jamaican opposition secures electoral victory

Jamaica's main opposition party, the People's National Party secures a big election victory. Results show ruling party winning only 22 parliamentary seats, while opposition takes 41 seats out of 63.

The election result will see veteran PNP politician Portia Simpson Miller return to the post of prime minister. The opposition leader capitalised on voter discontent over growing economic woes with unemployment running at 12%.

Labour Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, said the result was a "humbling" defeat for his Jamaica Labour Party.

The ruling Labour party conceded defeat after winning just 22 of the 63 parliamentary seats. With about 50% of ballots counted the opposition PNP is set to win 41 seats.
