Liu Xiaobo’s brothers willing to collect Nobel Prize

The brothers of Liu Xiaobo, winner of the Nobel peace prize and who is jailed, are willing to accept the prize oh his behalf in Norway if his wife would not be able to attend.

Xiaobo was sentenced to 11 years in prison last December on subversion charges after co-authoring a manifesto calling for political reform in China. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on October 8. This had infuriated China’s rulers.

As soon as the award was announced, Xiaobo’s wife, Liu Xia, was placed under house arrest at the couple’s Beijing apartment.

Liu’s brothers are concerned the police will increase surveillance of their movements.

Chinese authorities, in an apparent violation of prison rules, have refused to allow Liu Xiaoguang (one of the brothers) to visit Xiaobo. Nonetheless, they are planning to visit him in prison next month in the hope of discussing who will attend the event in Oslo.
