NSO - Registered unemployment for September up by 750 from last year

Slight decrease in registrants with a disability

Persons registering as unemployed totaled 7,619 in September of this year, up by a total of 750 from the corresponding month in 2012, according to the National Statistics Office. 

The Employment and Training Corporation (ETC) have provided data which indicate that there was an increase of 851 persons - or 13.6% - who registered under Part 1 of the unemployment register, whilst there was a drop of 101 persons - or 16.1% - who registered under Part 2 of the register. 

Registered unemployment in Malta rose to 6,866, or by 11 per cent, and in Gozo to 753, or by 10.1 per cent. 

There was an increase in registrants aged 45 and over, which went up by 9.9 per cent to 3,123 when compared to the figures in 2012. 

There was also an increase of 559 persons for those persons whose duration of unemployment exceeded one year. On the other hand, persons who had been registering for less than 21 weeks went up by 78. 

There was a marginal downward shift in the registrants with a disability, who numbered 518 during the month under review. 

In line with past trends, the largest share of unemployed men were seeking occupations in services, crafts and related jobs, whilst women mostly sought clerical jobs.
