Bail denied for use of false documentation

The accused was denied bail as there were concerns that he could abscond from Malta

Ruby Okeoma, 28 years old, a construction worker residing in Fgura, appeared before Magistrate Doreen Clark today, charged with falsification of official documents and of knowingly making use of them.

Inspector Darren Buhagiar requested the court order that the matter be investigated according to law.

Okeoma entered a plea of not guilty and requested bail, arguing that he has a fixed address, permanent residence and clean criminal record.

Prosecution opposed bail as the address is a rental property which he may change at any time and that the accused is a failed asylum seeker, so there is a chance that he may abscond from Malta.

Legal aid Anthony Stellini argued that “most Maltese people also live in rented accommodation” and that this is not grounds to refuse bail.

The defence added that he may be obligated by the courts to inform the police if he changes address. The defendant “has a medical condition requiring treatment”. It also added that forgery is not a threat to the public.

The court denied the accused bail.
