Two people have been seriously injured in an accident at a fireworks factory in Wied Qierda in Haz-Zebbug, the police have confirmed.

In a statement on Saturday evening the police said that two men - a 58-year-old man and a 26-year-old, both from Haz-Zebbug - were injured after a fire developed while they were burning material close to a fireworks factory in the vicinity.

At least two ambulances were dispatched to the scene to take the two individuals to Mater Dei for treatment.

A fire engine, and the Armed Forces of Malta's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was also at the site of incident.

A magisterial inquiry is ongoing.
