Zammit Clapp Residential Home facility manager Noel Borg has been honoured for his act of bravery last month when fire broke out in part of the elderly home.
That day, tragedy was avoided thanks to the courage and dedication not only of the Civil Protection Department personnel but also of the manager and employees of the Home who acted rapidly evacuating to safety the residents in the affected floors.
Unfortunately at one point, and just before the CPD people arrived on the spot, it was realized that four residents were caught in part of the third floor and could not be immediately taken down with the rest of the residents due to the fumes emanating from the laundry, the place where the fire started from.
Seeing this Noel Borg entered the building, crossed the corridor through the fire and fumes and took the frail residents to a safer part of the building staying with them until the CPD personnel could evacuate them as well.
This heroic act was yesterday recognized by CareMalta's board of directors during a short ceremony in which Borg was regaled with a golden pin of honour by company Chairman Nazzareno Vassallo in the presence of company CEO, Natalie Briffa Farrugia and all the staff of the Home.
Borg was also presented with a CareMalta board citation recognizing his courage and leadership on the day in question. Apart from Borg, all the employees who participated in the evacuation of the residents were also honoured by the company for their contribution in avoiding a tragedy.
Speaking during the event Briffa Farrugia explained how this episode was a life-changing event for her proving what a big responsibility whoever runs such homes has on his shoulders.
Zammit Clapp Residence is home to more than 124 elderly and the workplace of some 90 employees.
