President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca has administered the oath of office to new auditor general Charles Deguara and deputy auditor general Noel Camilleri as Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, Speaker of the House Censu Galea, acting leader of the opposition Mario De Marco and family members of the new appointees looked on.

In a brief address, Coleiro Preca highlighted the importance of the roles, which required a two-thirds majority vote to be approved by parliament, describing them as part of the checks and balances needed for accountability and transparency in democracy.

The outgoing Auditor General Anthony Mifsud will be succeeding judge Joseph Said Pullicino as Ombudsman, the latter having reached the end of his tenure in the role last month.

The Prime Minister made a swift exit after the ceremony and did not take questions from the press.
