Fidel Castro warns of a nuclear war against Iran
Radical leader Fidel Castro in an interview today warned that nuclear war could erupt if the West persist confrontations with Iran and North Korea
Castro, still the head of Cuba’s communist party at 83, said a nuclear outbreak is possible if the US, in alliance with Israel, attempt to enforce sanctions against Iran for its recent nuclear activities.
Iran, he said, has been building up for a confrontation for 30 years. If the United States attacks Iran, it will meet a resistance unlike anything it faced in Iraq, Castro said.
Throughout the hour and a half long interview, Castro reportedly appeared calm, occasionally displaying the dexterity of an influential speaker, in his first appearance since falling ill four years ago.
Castro’s younger brother, Raul, was elected President in 2008, in the same year that Fidel Castro resigned from power,
One topic which Castro sought to avoid is the release of 52 political prisoners, which coincided with his television appearance. The prisoners were jailed by Castro in 2003 during an opposition crackdown and are being released to Spain following a deal with the Catholic Church.
