Alligator wandering the streets of New York
New York police have caught an alligator after emerging from a storm drain onto Newton Avenue near 29th street.
The reptile measuring 20 inches was caught and had its jaws tightly shut after it attempted crawling around on the street.
A witness of the event said “That's the craziest thing I've ever seen… He was really small, but mean looking.”
A police spokesman said the animal in the street is a big mystery, and it could have been dumped from a car or emerged from a sewer. The animal was collected by animal control and will reportedly be taken to a licensed rehabilitation carer or reptile sanctuary.
Earlier this month, police were called after a small alligator was found trapped in the Chicago River, shortly after another alligator was caught swimming in the same area.
It is believed that the animals are abandoned by their owners after becoming too big as exotic pets.
In 2003, police caught a 4ft crocodile that was wandering around a park in Queens. However, animal experts say that the animals are unlikely to survive for long in an urban drainage system.
