11 children killed in minivan accident in Cape Town
A minibus crash has left nine children dead while on their way to school, where the van went head on into an oncoming train after swerving around a closed railway crossing gate.
The children, aged between eight and eleven, were en route through the Blackheath area of Cape Town.
The driver, who is in critical condition, will be investigated for homicide after and if he recovers, a Cape Town police spokesman said.
According to investigations, all precautionary measures were in place at the crossing "The crossing is protected by road signs, flashing lights and booms, which were confirmed to be in working order," the officials said in a statement…preliminary indications point towards possible negligent vehicle driver behaviour at the crossing point," railway officials said in a statement.
It’s been reported that two of the injured children had to be cut out of the completely wrecked van.
