62 asylum seekers land at Lampedusa

Another 20 asylum seekers have landed on the Italian island of Lampedusa during the night, raising the total number of migrants who had landed on the island in the past 24 hours to 62.

The migrants were intercepted by the Italian Coast Guard and the Italian fiscal police at the Favarolo quay on the island.

In the previous hours, another 42 migrants managed to find their way to Lampedusa while an O’Scia music concert - organised by Claudio Baglioni -  promoting integration and dialogue between cultures was being held.

In the next few hours, the newly-arrived asylum seekers will be transferred to the Italian Civil Protection tent at Porto Empedocle.

It was not excluded that the two asylum seekers’ boats had travelled on the same route to the Sicilian island.
