Rival parliaments in Libya sign initial deal
The UN special envoy for Libya said that this was a positive step forward
There seems to be some hope for the end of the political crises in Libya, as the country’s two rival parliaments have reached an initial agreement.
The new agreement will blaze the trail for general elections within the next two years. These will eventually lead to the setting up of a single government for the Libyan people.
The agreement still needs to be accepted by the internationally recognised parliament of Libya, and by the General National Congress based in Tripoli.
United Nations special envoy to Libya said that this agreement, which was signed in Tunis, is a positive step forward. It was explained that this agreement is separate from the UN mediation process for Libya.
The two factions are expected to meet in Rome next week to hold further peace talks.
