Obama hails India as 'indispensable' UN partner

US President Barack Obama has backed India’s bid for a permanent UN Security Council seat.

In a speech to the Indian parliament, Obama said he looked forward to “a reformed UN Security Council that includes India as a permanent member.”

At the same time, the US President warned that with power came responsibility as he criticised India for failing to condemn human rights abuses in neighbouring Myanmar.

India has been lobbying for a fixed seat on the UN’s highest body for year. The country says a seat on the council would reflect the importance of the G20 nation.
