Croatian police issue arrest warrant for ex-PM

The Croatian prime minister facing an international arrest warrant and is being sought after by police – having left the country just before his parliamentary immunity was lifted amid corruption suspicions.

Police spokesman Krunoslav Borovec told media Press that the warrant for Ivo Sanader was issued overnight between Thursday to Friday, and sent to Interpol.

Sanader, now a lawmaker, left Croatia on Thursday morning without problems as there was no warrant for him at the time.

In Croatia, a lawmaker can be sought, detained and prosecuted only after he's stripped of immunity. Parliament lifted Sanader's immunity Thursday afternoon, but he was already gone by then.

It's unclear where Sanader — who abruptly quit as prime minister on July 1, 2009 — is now.
