Assange believes he will be sent to US

A friend of Julian Assange has told Sky News the WikiLeaks founder believes he will be sent to the US, if he is extradited to Sweden.

The Australian is accused of sex offences in Sweden, amid anger in America over the WikiLeaks website releasing secret US documents.

The whistle-blower is waiting to hear when he will be summoned back to court, after Swedish prosecutors appealed a decision to offer him bail.

Frontline Club founder Vaughan Smith has offered to house 39-year-old Assange, if he is released.

"He clearly believes that, if he goes to Sweden, they will actually send him to America."

A judge had decided yesterday to free Assange after supporters agreed to post £200,000 cash deposit.

But he returned to Wandsworth Prison in southwest London after Swedish authorities launched a bid to overturn the ruling.

Assange is being held in solitary confinement.

He will appear at the High Court within two days, where a more senior judge will consider the appeal and whether to overturn the bail decision.

After the appeal was launched on Tuesday, Assange's lawyer Mark Stephens attacked the Swedish authorities.

Assange is wanted in Sweden over claims he sexually assaulted two women during a visit to Stockholm in August.

But his supporters claim the criminal inquiry and extradition request is unfair and politically motivated.

Assange was denied bail at his first court appearance last week on the grounds he could flee the country.

High-profile supporters, including socialite Jemima Khan, novelist Tariq Ali, campaigner Bianca Jagger and film-maker Ken Loach, offered sureties.

They were joined by veteran journalist John Pilger, gay rights activist Peter Tatchell and Mr Smith.
