Earthquake hits southern Iran

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale hit southern Iran - leaving 16 people injured.

The quake hit the town of Ardakan in the province of Fars at 9:25am (5:55 GMT) affecting 17 villages.

In 2003, 300,000 people were killed in an earthquake that devastated the southeastern city of Bam. Last month another earthquake in the northeast killed seven people and injured hundreds.
