At least 47 people have been killed and dozens others injured, in a fireworks factory explosion near the Indonesian capital of Jakarta on Thursday.

Regional police spokesman Argo Yuwono said that 103 workers were believed to be in the building at the time of the blast and 10 remained unaccounted for, according to CNN Indonesia.

"We don't know, however, if those 10 workers were actually in the factory at the time, or whether they may have been ill and not come to work," he said.

Thirty-four others were injured and have been taken to hospital, local police official Freddy Yudha said earlier.

The explosion took place on Thursday morning, in Tangerang, a satellite city on the western outskirts of Jakarta, home of several industrial parks.

According to Muhammad Suhermanto, local fire and disaster agency official, ten fire trucks were sent to the scene”.

He said that officials suspected that the explosion may have been triggered by a short circuit, which caused a small fire.

"There was a large explosion. Our suspicion is that the explosion was triggered by chemical materials inside the factory," Suhermanto said.

Police are currently working on identifying the bodies, said Yuwono.
