Voting is underway in Iceland today in the third general election in the last four years, triggered after it emerged that Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson’s father had written a letter recommending that a convicted paedophile have his “honour restored”.

Polls show Benediktsson’s Independence Party as having some slight ground on the Left-Green Movement.

This comes after information leaked from Panama law firm Mossack Fonseca’s servers forced the then Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson to resign in April 2016 following revelation of an undeclared offshore company he owned with his wife.

Voting will close at 10pm GMT today.
