Six-foot memorial for Paul the Octopus at Germany aquarium

World Cup predictor Paul the octopus will be remembered for its talent of predicting the outcome of Germany’s matches, where a memorial has been unveiled at the aquarium where it lived and died.

A statue honouring the creature is now on display at the Sea Life Aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany. The memorial, a 6ft-high plastic replica of Paul clutching a ball in his eight limbs, also holds his cremated ashes inside in an urn inside the ball.

Aquarium spokesperson Tanja Munzig said the memorial was made following requests from fans around the world.

The octopus, which “died peacefully in October”, correctly tipped the outcome of all seven of Germany's games. He had also predicted the Spain-Netherlands final.

He made his predictions by opening the lid of one of two boxes, each containing a mussel and bearing a team flag.

However, Paul failed to predict one outcome- the octopus tipped England to be picked to host the 2018 World Cup, but Russia was selected instead.
