The Royal Wedding: 1,900 guests to fill Westminster Abbey
An estimated 1,900 guests have been invited to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey, followed by a lunchtime reception hosted by the Queen at Buckingham Palace to be attended by around 650 people, and dinner hosted by The Prince of Wales, also at the Palace, where 300 people have been invited.
The majority of guests, invited by the Queen, are drawn from Prince William’s and Kate Middleton’s families and friends.
More than 50 guests are part of the British Royal family itself. Another 40 members of foreign royal families have been invited.
Guests are expected to include around 200 members of government, parliament and diplomatic corps, around 60 governors-general and realm prime-ministers, around 30 members of the defence service, and approximately 80 guests from Prince William’s charities.
Britain’s royalty includes the Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Henry of Wales.
Guests from foreign royal families include the Prince and Princess of the Asturias, the Crown Prince of Bahrain, the Queen of Denmark, Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde of Belgium, the Crown Prince and Princess of the Netherlands and the King and Queen of Norway.
The Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife, secretaries of state and the Speaker of the House of Commons and Mrs John Bercow are among the many members of government and parliament invited. A number of members of other faiths and representatives of the Church will also be attending, as well as senior members of the Defence Services.
The Syrian ambassador Dr Sami Khiyami’s invitation to the wedding has been withdrawn after officials said it was "inappropriate" for him to attend, amid condemnation of a violent crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in the country.
Scores of other guests which are sure to turn heads include power couple David and Victoria Beckham, Sir Elton John, actor Rowan Atkinson, director Guy Ritchie, singer Joss Stone, photographer Mario Testino and socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson.
Other names invited with their spouses or partners are David Allan, Chairman of Mountain Rescue, England and Wales, of which Prince William has been a Patron since 2007, and Alison Moore-Gwyn, Chief Executive of Fields in Trust.
