Four new quay cranes for Malta Freeport

Malta Freeport Terminals is the only hub in the Mediterranean capable of handling 18,000 TEUs and over on two berths

Malta Freeport Terminals today received four new quayside cranes which arrived at the Freeport’s facilities on the heavy load carrier ‘Zhen Hua 13’.

These Cranes, which were built by ZPMC in Shanghai, have exceptional specifications having an outreach of 72m, a capacity of 85 tonnes, a lifting height under spreader above rail of 54m and capable of handling twin-lift spreaders.

The new cranes are able to effectively handle 18,000 TEU vessels and larger.

“This investment was imperative for the Freeport considering that the shipping lines are investing heavily in ever-larger container vessels. With these cranes, Malta Freeport Terminals is the only hub in the Mediterranean capable of handling 18,000 TEUs and over on two berths,” the company said.

Three of these cranes will be placed on terminal one north quay and one on terminal two north quay. In preparation for the arrival of the new cranes, Malta Freeport Terminals undertook infrastructural works thus ensuring that the new quay cranes will be able to operate alongside the overall length of the quay.

The new quay cranes are equipped with the latest technology.

“Undoubtedly the various development projects being undertaken at Malta Freeport are not an end in themselves and the undeniable objective is to be able to deliver services in line with the clients’ expectations whilst guaranteeing them an unfailing performance.”
