Private report says condom use remains 'consistently poor'
A reported Boffa Hospital's head of the GU clinic, Dr Philip Carabot sees growth in casual sex and a consistently poor use of condoms,, with 75% admitting to never using one.
Data in the report is derived solely from the 19,367 patients seen at the GU Clinic over the last 11 years, and it is not representative of the Maltese Islands.
According to the report, between January 2000 and December 2010, 70% (13,557) of the new patients were patients attending for the first time or past patients attending with a new complaint.
62% of the new patients were male, whilst 38% were female. The majority, 72% were single, 12% were married, 10% separated and 6% divorced.
With regards to sexual orientation, 90% were heterosexual, 8% were men who have sex with men (MSM) and 2% bisexual. Only 14 patients were lesbian.
According to the report, 20% admitted to anal sex – at least occasionally. “It is worth noting that 75% of those admitting to anal sex were heterosexual,” the report added.
