Ukranian sentenced to 25 years in prison for causing wife’s death

With seven votes to two, Ukranian national Sergeii Nykytiuk was found guilty of causing the death of his wife. He was jailed to 25 years.

Ukranian Sergeii Nykytiuk, 41, was sentenced to 25 years in prison after jurors found him guilty of having caused the death of his wife, Lyudmila, two years ago in St Paul’s Bay.

The jurors - who started deliberating this morning at around 11am – went back with a result this evening, finding him guilty with seven votes to two.

The domestic violence victim, Lyudmila Nykytiuk, died after falling down a lift shaft in a block of apartments in Ramon Perellos Street, where the couple lived. It is believed that Sergeii chased after his wife down the stairs who slipped and fell during an argument the two were having.

It is believed that Sergeii did nothing to help his wife who, with the fall, suffered a slow and painful death. Experts testifying in court said that the woman could have survived if her husband called for medical assistance.

Lyudmila, aged 35, bled to death.
