Facing facts: Maltese second most avid Facebook users in Europe
Users of social network sites like Facebook are a minority in Malta, but those who access these sites tend to do so more frequently than other Europeans.
Only a third of the Maltese use social network sites like Facebook, Twitter and Myspace – 56% of whom do so on a daily basis and a further 19% use them two or three times a week.
This shows that while access to social network sites is just slightly higher than the European average of 35%, daily use among those who have access is among the highest in Europe.
Only Cypriot users use these sites more frequently than the Maltese.
According to Eurobarometer, the Cypriots, Maltese, Swedes, Latvians and Finns are the most frequent users of social networking sites, with between 59% and 53% using them every day or almost every day. The lowest incidence of frequent users is in Romania, with only 11% registering everyday (or almost everyday) use, and furthermore only 11% using such sites two or three times a week.
The incidence of usage is greatest in Latvia, where almost six out of 10 respondents (57%) are using social networking websites compared to Malta’s 36%.
Usage is next highest in the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden where about five out of 10 respondents are using social networking sites.
But users in these countries tend to use these sites on a less regular basis than the Maltese.
For example 53% of Latvians use these sites on a daily basis compared to 56% of the Maltese.
