Pedestrians and cyclists will find it easier to cross the major thoroughfare leading to the airport after the Planning Authority gave the green light for a bridge.

The footbridge will span 11 metres above Vjal l-Avjazzjoni, enabling safer passenger movements around Malta International Airport and the ITS campus sited at the former Air Malta campus.

The project submitted by Infrastructure Malta was approved by the Planning Authority on Tuesday morning and will also serve as a “landmark structure”.

It will also help reduce traffic congestion caused by the frequent use of pelican lights in the area, which will be removed.

The bridge will have two ramps on either side built out of reinforced concrete and spanned over with a steel structure.

The concrete will be finished in a white smooth finish. The structure spanning the road section will consist of a tubular structure in light yellow.

The bridge and ramps will be split to house pedestrian and cyclist traffic.
