Libyan airspace closed over Tripoli
The airspace over the Libyan capital Tripoli was closed indefinitely on Monday, according to the Austrian Army, which sought to evacuate European nationals from Libya on a military plane.
A C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft from the Austrian Army was originally scheduled to leave Malta for Libya around 18:30 but it was delayed because only a handful of European nationals had been able to reach the Tripoli airport.
Consequently, closing the airspace does not have an impact for the moment on the evacuation. In conjunction with other EU states, Austria also earlier issued a travel warning for Libya.
Meanwhile, gunfire crackled in the streets of Tripoli and protesters set government buildings ablaze, as the son of leader Muammar Gaddafi warned of a civil war and the death toll was believed to have reached up to 400.
