Kordin Grain Terminal in legal bid to stop cement silo
Government-owned company in legal bid to stop storage of cement in close proximity to silos storing grain, claiming that this could pose serious health risks
Kordin grain Terminal Company Limited has opened a court case to stop the development of a cement silo in close proximity to its silos which are used to store grain used in animal feed and bread making.
MaltaToday is informed that yesterday Malta Environment and Planning Authority officials intervened to stop a ship from unloading cement in the new silo. But UC Ltd, the company which owns the cement silo, has asked for a court injunction against the Malta Environment and Planning Authority. The court is expected to decide on this request shortly.
UC Ltd's cement silo is located on property belonging to Valletta Gateway Terminals which is owned by Tumas Group and Mauritius based Portek Ports Limited.
Kordin Grain Terminal claims that the silo located close to its grain silos could pose a health risk due to its proximity to the grain silos.
On Monday in a court hearing, Kordin Grain Terminal Company Limited asked for the appointment of a technical expert to determine the impact of the cement storage on its grain. The court is expected to decide whether to accept this demand on 12 February.
On 20 November 2013 Ivan Carabott on behalf of UC Ltd applied to sanction an illegally developed substation and to construct ancillary rooms to the cement silo plant in the port boundaries.
