British MP charged with common assault

Labour MP Eric Joyce has been suspended by the party after his alleged involvement in a fight at a bar of the House of Commons.

Sky News reports that police officers have already interviewed staff at Strangers Bar and MPs who were present during the fight, which took place on Wednesday evening.

Commons Speaker John Bercow has told MPs not to discuss the incident which involved the 51-year-old MP for Falkirk.

"Members will be aware of reports of a serious incident in the House," Sky News reports Bercow as saying.

"I have been informed by the Serjeant at Arms that the honourable member for Falkirk has been detained in police custody.

"The matter is being investigated. I take this matter very seriously, as do the House authorities."
