While on a holiday in Switzerland, 28 people were killed when a bus carrying Belgian students returning from a ski holiday crashed into a wall in a Swiss tunnel.

Twenty-four students were hospitalised and some 22 of those killed in the accident were children.

Belgian foreign minister Didier Reynders could not explain how the accident occurred while three other buses were not involved. The bus did not contact any other vehicle before hitting a wall in a tunnel.

Valais cantonal (state) police said the bus was carrying 52 people and crashed around 9pm near a popular ski area in the Swiss Alps.

The injured were carried to the hospital by a rescue helicopter and ambulances and Belgian media reported that the children were from two towns, Lommel, east of Antwerp, and Heverlee, near Leuven.

A crisis centre was set up together with an emergency number for families while authorities continued to identify all the victims.
