Video | Indonesia struck by earthquake, tsunami, violent volcano eruption
At least 100 people were killed on the Indonesian island of Mentawai. 200 are reported missing as a 10 metre high tsunami hit the island soon after a 7.7 magnitude quake rocked the archipelago.
The 10ft high tsunami hit the west coast of Indonesia last night. It was triggered by an undersea earthquake that measured 7.7 on the Richter scale. The wave has reportedly washed away hundreds of houses in 10 coastal villages on the Mentawai islands, off the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
It has taken 12 hours for the rescue and emergency teams to reach the remote area and the death toll is expected to rise.
Meanwhile, just two hours after, Indonesia’s Mount Merapi erupted three times emitting searing clouds and volcanic ashes, a volcanologist said.
“We heard three explosions around 06:00 pm [local time] spewing volcanic materials as high as 1.5 kilometres upward and heatclouds down on the slopes,” a government official said.
