First engines for power station extension arrive
The first batch of equipment has arrived at Delimara, which will allow works to begin on the controversial new extension of the power station being built to allow Malta to meet the increased demand for electrical energy by the general public and by industry
The first four diesel engines that will be used for the generation of electricity arrived yesterday, with another four to arrive in the coming days. Four generators that can be linked to the engines also arrived.
Once the other engines arrive they will form the heart of the extension, which has the potential of creating 144 megawatts of electricity.
The completed power station will have a total of eight turbines and two 65 metre chimneys. Emissions will be monitored regularly.
The extension of the power station is the result of government investment of €165 million and a further €18 million over five years in servicing of equipment.
The government has acquired funding from the European Investment Bank to finance this project as well as the installation of smart metres in homes that will replace conventional metres.
The extension of the power station at Delimara was approved by MEPA following discussions in Parliament.
