Old Vic reveals 20 allegations against Kevin Spacey

20 men have come forward with sexual allegations against the theatre's former artistic director, following other allegations made against him

The Old Vic theatre in England has received 20 allegations of inappropriate behaviour by Kevin Spacey.

Spacey, who was the artistic director at the Old Vic between 2004 and 2015, is already facing a police investigation in the UK over an alleged sexual assault in London.

The victims who have come forward said they "felt unable to raise concerns", and that he "operated without sufficient accountability".

The theatre has since said it “truly apologises” for not creating a safe environment where people felt able to speak freely.

In a statement on Thursday, the Old Vic said it will “commit to a new way forward”.

“Despite having the appropriate escalation processes in place, it was claimed that those affected felt unable to raise concerns and that Kevin Spacey operated without sufficient accountability.

"This is clearly unacceptable and The Old Vic truly apologises for not creating an environment or culture where people felt able to speak freely."

There have been 20 individual allegations and 16 from former staff, all of whom are men. Only one of these claims reported was raised with the management, while three people contacted the police.

The theatre said 14 of the allegations were so serious that it advised the victims to take the matter up with the police.

Current artistic director at the Old Vic, Matthew Warchus said he had "genuine and deep sympathy for all those who have come forward and said they were hurt in some way by my predecessor's actions".

"Everyone is entitled to work in an environment free from harassment and intimidation. The Old Vic is now actively engaged in the process of healing and the process of prevention."

The investigation is continuing so more people can come forward.

Spacey has not yet responded to the allegations.
